Contact speed control

The velocity of the solenoid movement can be
controlled by reduced power supply voltage. The
voltage across the armature and the strength of the
magnetic field is the main factor which affect the
speed of the solenoid [68]. This can be controlled by
many methods i.e. shunt field, armature resistance,
variable voltage and multi-voltage. In this research
work, the armature resistance method is used to
control speed. The wiring diagram to control
contact opening velocity by inserting a variable
resistor in series with a supply solenoid is shown in
Figure 7.8 - 7.9 to reduce the speed of solenoid. The
supply voltage of the solenoid is decreased due to
the voltage drop across the series resistance. The
contact velocity can be regulated between 10 m/s
and 1 m/s with average tolerance 0.02 m/s.
